The theory behind this refill is that there is one perforated filter per box that can be broken in half for use as 2 filters with the Honeywell 40100 series air purifier.



That, at least, is the theory...



In reality, the filter is perforated as advertised; however, there is so much glue along the perforation holding the accordion folds together, that it is virtually impossible to break the filter in half.



I tried to break it by just flexing the perforation, as the directions indicated. It didn't separate. I tried flexing it harder and bending it back and forth to break them apart. The glue started separating at the folds. The glue coming apart caused the filter to open up at some of the accordion folds, so the filter was no longer round. I tried a knife to cut the two filters apart. Ditto on breaking up the accordion folds. Finally resorted to a hacksaw to separate them.



The only bright thing of the whole fiasco - they did finally work when I crammed them into the units.



After effectively almost destroying the filters I called the manufacturer (Honeywell) and they indicated that these are not the filters that they sell. They are an aftermarket item with the Honeywell logo. Honeywell does not endorse them. Surprise, surprise! They recommended that you only buy the replacement HEPA filters sold on the Honeywell website for the model 40100 air cleaner. I second that recommendation -- wholeheartedly!

I just received one of these yesterday and plugged it in about an hour before I went to bed. My bedroom is 12'x18', so I was a little skeptical. I have incredibly bad allergies and it was only two nights ago that I woke in the middle of the night when my throat started swelling shut. Normally, I wake at least 5-6 times to use my inhaler or blow my nose. Today, I woke up extremely refreshed after 6 hours of the soundest sleep I've had in years... and perhaps ever! I thought that it would improve my allergies to a point that I wouldn't wake up painfully congested in the morning, but I never imagined that it would eliminate my problems completely. I'm picking up a few more to put around the rest of the house!!!!

With 100 watts and a tiny coverage, this purifier is not energy efficient. The HEPA filter replacement for this product is so overpriced that the difference between the filter and the complete unit is only about $5-$10. Worse, Holmes stated that the HEPA filter must be replaced on 3-6 months of continued use. That's a pretty short life.

Quiet? nah. In fact it ties on loudness (on mid setting) with my Hamilton Beach TrueAir 04161, just slightly quieter on high setting ,and actually louder in lowest setting. The sound produced is also a rough motor type sound, which is not so pleasant to hear.

Its CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate, a measurement standard for air purifiers -- www.cadr.org) is only a measly 55-70.

However, it does its job removing particles from the air quite well on high setting.

If you can, get a better air purifier that has a cheap and long lasting HEPA filter.

I am a very careful shopper, and meticulously care for my property. This air cleaner was purchased on the recommendation of Consumer Reports.



The air cleaner would work well for awhile, but then I would notice BLACK FLECKS all over the walls, ceiling, windows, throughout the air cleaner ...... everywhere throughout the room!!!!!



This mess is caused by the replaceable "carbon filter" at the back of the air cleaner, and the mess DOES NOT clean up with soap and water - a heavy cleaning agent is required!!!!!



After the 4th mess throughout the family room, and numerous replacements of the "carbon filter" (one $24.00 filter lasting a whole 2 weeks before it spewed all over the walls and the air cleaner itself), I ordered a "pre-cleaning filter" to replace the "carbon filter", but the air cleaner no longer turned on. I believe too much BLACK GUNK from the carbon filter had ruined the air cleaner - and there is no way to take the air cleaner apart to clean the inside.



I made contact with the company for help with the problem. They merely guessed at what might have happened and offered no solutions.



After only 2 years this $500.00 air cleaner (not including the numerous replaceable "carbon filters") now rests in a land fill!!!

 "5 stars for the product, 1 star for the manual" 2007-09-24

I have owned this guy since it came out and am very happy with the product, but the manual could use some improvement.



Used properly you'll get years of trouble free, cheap and clean air. The chief concern with a unit of this type is ozone production. Ozone is *bad* for you. This unit is *the* best rated unit for ozone production and its ozone levels are very safe -- *IF* the unit is properly serviced.



What the manual doesn't tell you -- if you smell ozone you need to clean the element. You will need to clean the element a lot. If you cant/won't do that, this is not the air cleaner you are looking for.



The second problem with the manual is the cleaning directions are frankly harmful. The manual says to use dish detergent. The dish detergent will react with the aluminum and over a long enough time line turning the element black. This deposit will act like a dielectric (just like the dirt the element collects naturally) and the thing will spew out ozone. Once this had happened I could not get the element clean again and had to replace it.



I suggest you clean the element in your dishwasher, with *no* soap and no jet dry. Fill the soap bucket with pure white vinegar and do a light wash. It will come out sparkling clean and so far mine has not changed colors -- sometimes simple is better. Vinegar is a natural aluminum cleaner. Do *NOT* add cream of tartar or baking soda (this is a common aluminum cleaning recipe) -- this will get baked on to the element and it will *never* come off. Ask me how I found out? :-)



Lastly, the element is a very standard Honeywell element. You can purchase one for around $125 from online HVAC sites should yours become soiled or damaged (the part # is stamped on the side of the element).

This is a wonderful air purifier. I did my research before buying and pulled the trigger about 2 months ago. I am so glad I did. I no longer have the allergy issues that I had in years past. My main focus was clean air without the costly filter replacements. That is what you get with the C-90B. I placed mine in the bedroom and run it whenever I sleep. I just cannot begin to tell you how much it has improved my life. I sleep better and my waking hours are better as well. I would highly recommend this product to anyone as I am very pleased.    "Filter for my art studio?" 2007-05-15

  I bought this air purifier for my art studio because it advertised the ability to filter out VOC's and can absorb gases for chemically sensitive people. As a painter with a poorly-ventilated studio that is next to other artists' studios, I needed something that would clear the air of painting fumes. So far, the filter has worked great. The air that comes out of it is clean, and I find it is powerful, given it's size. Once I accidentally left it on over the weekend on the first setting (because you can't hear it when it is on low) and my studio smelled and felt very clean.
  
  
  
  The downside is that it does not have a filter change indicator, leaving me clueless as to when the filters should be changed. I assume that if it is working in "dirtier" conditions than the next air filter, it would need changing more often than the stated filter change recommended in the manual. And be assured, the HEPA filter is expensive ($140) and needs to be changed yearly. The prefilters are cheaper ($10) and need to be changed more often.
  
  
  
  On its higher setting, it is not a quiet machine, but it is not loud either. It makes an almost inaudible hum with a distinct noise like wind passing through a small space, but it does not bother me -- in fact, I find it comforting. The noise is comparable to, if not less than, the Honeywell (I also own). The lesser two settings are very quiet.
  
  
  
  The other trivia fact about it that I didn't know until purchasing it is that the clean air that comes out is directed at a 45 degree angle up and sideways from the vent. I am not sure why it was designed to be that way.

Nobody ever answered at the customer service line (that is, when they were even open / available) and replacement parts are pretty much non-existent. Biggest waste of money I've ever had.

I purchased this device on-line from Sylvane. Unfortunately, I believed the product review that was done by Consumer Reports. In this case, that was a big mistake.



After one month of use, the unit started making a constant buzzing sound whenever it was plugged in, independent of whether it was turned on or not. When I called the Danby warranty service phone number I was told that since I purchased the unit from Sylvane I would have to return it to them for service.



There are three service centers listed on the Danby web site. An incorrect phone number is listed for two of them. All three said they no longer service Danby products.



This combination dehumidifier, humidifier, and air purifier, which is a Canadian product that is made in China, is worthless. Don't waste your time or your money on it.



If I could have rated this product with less than one star I would have.

I bought this machine out of desperation. It appeared to be well designed and contained a dehumidifier and humidifier and an air filter.

It was available at a nearby store and I paid more than I should have for it.



Well, I read bad reviews of this thing (about 60/40) but bought it anyway, and I have the topper for them all This piece of junk stopped working after FOUR HOURS OF OPERATION.



It did really well for the four hours. Now its little digital display won't light up, its bucket indicator is full, but there is no water in the bucket. I'm taking the trash back to the retailer today and buying a Kenmore at Sears instead.



AVOID THIS PRODUCT. DO NOT BUY IT.

I swear by this air filter: it is small, yet does the job and it is so quiet, you barely know it's there. I have the tree bark design and when I was showing off my new filter, my friend didn't even notice it. Now that is quiet and blending right in to the decor! I have it on a shelf on my headboard and I sleep better at night.

I bought this mostly to deal with the smell of my wife's cigarette smoke. I knew that a unit like this would not make the smell of smoke completely go away, but it does a pretty decent job of it. I thought the air smelled fresher, but I'm too used to the smell. Friends tell me that they still smell the smoke, but it's less than before. At this price, that's probably the best I can hope for.



I also like how quiet the unit is. I've researched many different models and read many complaints about the noise. I'm a light sleeper and would have no difficulty sleeping with this on at it's lowest settings. It doesn't compete at all with conversation or TV. Now, the reality is that it's quieter because it's fan speeds at each level are a little less than on competing units which means that it's moving less air, but I find the result to be just fine if left to run at the lowest settings.



It's too new for me to have to clean the permanent filter or replace the others yet. I'm told that cleaning the main filter is a pain, but that seems to be true of all models. The replaceable filters for this unit seem more reasonably priced than other models I've looked at.



The only other issue is the aesthetic. It has a very contemporary design. Pretty nice looking if that's the way you've decorated your home, but our decor is very colonial so it looks a bit out of place.



So the smoke smell didn't completely go away, but it's definitely better, and this unit is reasonably priced and pleasant to live with. I think it's a good value and am preparing to purchase a second unit for upstairs.

This product is awesome. I don't care about what they say regarding noisy air purifiers, or large or whatever. This product beats it all. First it has 4 speeds and an auto mode, when it on medium or high it's almost as comparable to a regular fan, but still not as noisy as an A/C. Also it's REALY QUIET on quiet speed, believe me you won't hear a thing (maybe the white noise a little). Then There's awesome looking shape of it. It looks nice so it'll go well with your furniture. Then there's the amazing power of purifying the air. It utilizes a 9 stage system for filtering, believe me it works. I smoke cigars, and turn this beast on to get rid of the smoke, so that my wife doesn't get on my case. After running for 8 hours on high no cigar smoke or smell at all. THIS IS GOOD PEOPLE, I'm talking about cigars here not cigarettes, or cooking or pet odor. Plus when its on auto mode, it has a sensor so whenever it picks up on dust or odor it kicks into high gear to get rid of the smell and then cools back down. Last and maybe a key factor, this air purifier is considerably cheaper than most and gets the job done better than it's more expensive adversaries. So I recommend this air purifier for those looking for a system that delivers great power but at a reasonable price.

Shopping for the right air cleaner in my opinion is more of a challange than shopping for a new car. I studied most all of them and found that there are many con-games going on with cleaver advertise schemes. I ended up purchasing both Newport 9000 and the Sharp FP-N60CX because I couldn't decide. And I love both. It has been six months and they are on all the time -- contineous. I have four large dogs, the air is fresh and my girfriend with dog allergies is doing fine. I have found both reliable economical and working as advertised. I use the Newport in the larger living-room and the Sharp in the bedroom. They both appear to be on the leading edge of technology sampling the air and automatically adjust. Both are operating in the automatic mode day and night -- noise is not a problem. Perfectly Satisfied.
