I live in a dorm room built in the 1950's. It is dusty and moldy, and last year I was sick almost immediately from the mold. This year, I decided to get an air purifier, and I'm breathing just fine. It is a little noisy, but no louder than a fan. The noise is fine for me because I like white noise when I sleep. It doesn't detract from how well this works for me. I'm glad that I bought it; this air purifier was a great investment towards my health.

We have been using the Honeywell filtre in our air cleaner for several years now and found that it works very well. When we do our periodic cleaning of the filter we are always amazed at how much dust and dirt it has collected. Which means that the air we are breathing is much cleaner.

The theory behind this refill is that there is one perforated filter per box that can be broken in half for use as 2 filters with the Honeywell 40100 series air purifier.



That, at least, is the theory...



In reality, the filter is perforated as advertised; however, there is so much glue along the perforation holding the accordion folds together, that it is virtually impossible to break the filter in half.



I tried to break it by just flexing the perforation, as the directions indicated. It didn't separate. I tried flexing it harder and bending it back and forth to break them apart. The glue started separating at the folds. The glue coming apart caused the filter to open up at some of the accordion folds, so the filter was no longer round. I tried a knife to cut the two filters apart. Ditto on breaking up the accordion folds. Finally resorted to a hacksaw to separate them.



The only bright thing of the whole fiasco - they did finally work when I crammed them into the units.



After effectively almost destroying the filters I called the manufacturer (Honeywell) and they indicated that these are not the filters that they sell. They are an aftermarket item with the Honeywell logo. Honeywell does not endorse them. Surprise, surprise! They recommended that you only buy the replacement HEPA filters sold on the Honeywell website for the model 40100 air cleaner. I second that recommendation -- wholeheartedly!

I just received one of these yesterday and plugged it in about an hour before I went to bed. My bedroom is 12'x18', so I was a little skeptical. I have incredibly bad allergies and it was only two nights ago that I woke in the middle of the night when my throat started swelling shut. Normally, I wake at least 5-6 times to use my inhaler or blow my nose. Today, I woke up extremely refreshed after 6 hours of the soundest sleep I've had in years... and perhaps ever! I thought that it would improve my allergies to a point that I wouldn't wake up painfully congested in the morning, but I never imagined that it would eliminate my problems completely. I'm picking up a few more to put around the rest of the house!!!!

With 100 watts and a tiny coverage, this purifier is not energy efficient. The HEPA filter replacement for this product is so overpriced that the difference between the filter and the complete unit is only about $5-$10. Worse, Holmes stated that the HEPA filter must be replaced on 3-6 months of continued use. That's a pretty short life.

Quiet? nah. In fact it ties on loudness (on mid setting) with my Hamilton Beach TrueAir 04161, just slightly quieter on high setting ,and actually louder in lowest setting. The sound produced is also a rough motor type sound, which is not so pleasant to hear.

Its CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate, a measurement standard for air purifiers -- www.cadr.org) is only a measly 55-70.

However, it does its job removing particles from the air quite well on high setting.

If you can, get a better air purifier that has a cheap and long lasting HEPA filter.

This is my second unit, the first lasted 7 years. The unit runs 24/7 and I clean the filters twice a month. Its a little loud on high and you occasionally hear pops, but it works. You would be surprised as to the amount of black soot that is washed out. I would recommend it highly.

 "BEWARE OF HORRIFIC MESS!!!" 2008-03-03

I am a very careful shopper, and meticulously care for my property. This air cleaner was purchased on the recommendation of Consumer Reports.



The air cleaner would work well for awhile, but then I would notice BLACK FLECKS all over the walls, ceiling, windows, throughout the air cleaner ...... everywhere throughout the room!!!!!



This mess is caused by the replaceable "carbon filter" at the back of the air cleaner, and the mess DOES NOT clean up with soap and water - a heavy cleaning agent is required!!!!!



After the 4th mess throughout the family room, and numerous replacements of the "carbon filter" (one $24.00 filter lasting a whole 2 weeks before it spewed all over the walls and the air cleaner itself), I ordered a "pre-cleaning filter" to replace the "carbon filter", but the air cleaner no longer turned on. I believe too much BLACK GUNK from the carbon filter had ruined the air cleaner - and there is no way to take the air cleaner apart to clean the inside.



I made contact with the company for help with the problem. They merely guessed at what might have happened and offered no solutions.



After only 2 years this $500.00 air cleaner (not including the numerous replaceable "carbon filters") now rests in a land fill!!!

 "5 stars for the product, 1 star for the manual" 2007-09-24

I have owned this guy since it came out and am very happy with the product, but the manual could use some improvement.



Used properly you'll get years of trouble free, cheap and clean air. The chief concern with a unit of this type is ozone production. Ozone is *bad* for you. This unit is *the* best rated unit for ozone production and its ozone levels are very safe -- *IF* the unit is properly serviced.



What the manual doesn't tell you -- if you smell ozone you need to clean the element. You will need to clean the element a lot. If you cant/won't do that, this is not the air cleaner you are looking for.



The second problem with the manual is the cleaning directions are frankly harmful. The manual says to use dish detergent. The dish detergent will react with the aluminum and over a long enough time line turning the element black. This deposit will act like a dielectric (just like the dirt the element collects naturally) and the thing will spew out ozone. Once this had happened I could not get the element clean again and had to replace it.



I suggest you clean the element in your dishwasher, with *no* soap and no jet dry. Fill the soap bucket with pure white vinegar and do a light wash. It will come out sparkling clean and so far mine has not changed colors -- sometimes simple is better. Vinegar is a natural aluminum cleaner. Do *NOT* add cream of tartar or baking soda (this is a common aluminum cleaning recipe) -- this will get baked on to the element and it will *never* come off. Ask me how I found out? :-)



Lastly, the element is a very standard Honeywell element. You can purchase one for around $125 from online HVAC sites should yours become soiled or damaged (the part # is stamped on the side of the element).

This is a wonderful air purifier. I did my research before buying and pulled the trigger about 2 months ago. I am so glad I did. I no longer have the allergy issues that I had in years past. My main focus was clean air without the costly filter replacements. That is what you get with the C-90B. I placed mine in the bedroom and run it whenever I sleep. I just cannot begin to tell you how much it has improved my life. I sleep better and my waking hours are better as well. I would highly recommend this product to anyone as I am very pleased. Thank you Friedrich for making such a great product!
