"Well built, quiet, works well" 2009-10-11
By James B. Charles (New Jersey)
I have always had bad allergies. I've had several HEPA filters. Based on how well this is constructed, I can imagine it may be the last HEPA filter that I purchase. It is made of galvanized steel and is solid down to the speed setting dial. Filters are of average price for a unit of this size (about $50 every 6 months).

The unit is very, very quiet. Inaudible on the low speed. I keep it on 3 which you can hear, but it moves a lot of air. 4 is loud but good for quickly cleaning up the air if necessary. Air is electrostatically charged before moving through the filter media, which I have found is a worthwhile feature for HEPA filters.

If you have pets or a smoker in the house, you can purchase replacement filters with activated charcoal at an increased cost. Another nice feature. Filters are very easy to change and it takes only seconds to replace them.

Overall, I am most impressed with how well built the unit is. Nothing else I have ever seen even comes close. Most look like toys in comparison.

"Very quiet and effective air purifier" 2009-07-11
By Roger Berlind (NY, USA)
We've had several BlueAir purifiers for at least 5 or 6 years now and are very happy with them. They are quiet at low speeds and have very high ratings for the amount of air they purify. We bought ours based on recommendations from the Allergy Buyer's Club. My wife is allergic to our Norwegian Elkhound and is only able to tolerate him because of our BlueAir purifiers.

We like the two 402 units that we have more than the 601 unit. The 402 units have 4 speeds, the lower 2 of which allow us to sleep. The 601 unit only has 3 speeds, of which only the lowest is quiet enough to allow sleep or listening to music or TV in the same room. The 601 unit is good for a family room or living room as long as you turn down the speed while in the room. The 402 units are much better for bedrooms.

 "so far work well...." 2009-06-22
By S. Kim (TX)
I bought this air purifier last year from Amazon. This year, this air purifier decreases my allergy symptom significantly. This year I did not take any medicine so far. Comparing other brands, Blueair is the quietest one I have ever had except Sharper Image that has a problem with excessive Ozone creating. If you have an allergy problem, it is worth to use it. One problem was a setting location because the air direction is somehow odd. Air direction has left 45 which have a hard time to be located. Otherwise, it works for me!

"Great unit but larger than I expected" 2009-05-15
By T. Tom (SF Bay Area, CA United States)
This is a great unit but it larger than I expected. If you have a small bedroom or office, it may look a bit imposing.

It runs very quiet at the two lowest settings and even at the third setting, I found the sound soothing enough to sleep with!

On the negative side, it has no electronic timer, remote or digital display like some of the other units have. It's also quite cumbersome and heavy to move and includes no caster wheels to make that easier.

On the plus side, it works very well and is more efficient and quiet than smaller units. The design is also more proven; I compared it with a smaller unit (the 250E) and the 400 series works a lot better for a number of reasons (better filter, it charges the particles so that they stick to the filter, larger, etc.) Also, because of the design, you can put things like books on top of it if you want to since it takes in and output air from the sides. You can also place it against a wall, something you cannot really do with the smaller 250E as it has the filter on the back.

All in all, this is a great unit as it performs very well is very quiet and well made.

 "Ok for Light Smoking" 2007-12-13
By Steven H. Hicks (New York, NY)
I bought the 402 with the Smokestop filter as I smoke about 3 cigars a week in my apt in the wintertime. This model is good enough for my purposes, but if you smoke more than that I'd suggest the 501 instead.

As others have noted, the 402 is silent on settings 1 and 2 and produces about the same amount of noise as a tower PC fan on setting 3. Setting 4 is noisy so I switch to that setting just before I leave for work if I've smoked the night before. When I return at the end of the day there us usually little or no smoke smell.

I'd estimate the Smokestop filter to contain about 3 pounds of activated charcoal. Much more than the thin layer found in most filters.

The unit itself is very well constructed and for an air filter it looks stylish. Access to the inside for the occasional vacuuming and filter change is extremely easy (large hinged side door).

This is my 2nd Rabbit Air MinusA2. My first Rabbit air runs at fan speed lvl 3 non stop for one year already and it's still running well just like new(of course I do change filter after 1 yr). Why I don't pick up other brand? Because it is Small, Powerful, Quiet, Beautiful, Reliable, Efficient and it does make the air in my room so clean, lots of my friends come to my place they can tell the difference; and already 3 of them pick up Rabbit Air MinusA2 after they saw it. A lot good purifier out there and I believe most of the high end purifier they all perform well, but they are all in HUGE size.

If you want a great purifier also care about the look in your room, you will be happy with Rabbit Air MinusA2, no matter you choose the black or white one.

"Outstanding Air Filtration & ever So quiet!!!" 2009-03-25
By Mark Bickham (Orlando, FL)
Let me first say, I can't stand noise! This Air Filter works wonderfully, worth every penny and more, because not only does it work great, but unless it's on high you don't even know it's there. Let me also clarify, when it's on high, it's not loud enough to distract or even bother you while on a phone call. I love it, highly recommend it, and I bought two, and both are flawless.

Little warning to those that want to order more than one! Place individual orders, I had a small problem with the company only shipping me one, though my order was for two. They not only corrected my order, but gave me an extra filter free of charge. The company cares about its customers, however, I would still have preferred to receive my complete order on time.

Lastly, they look so cool! Really eye catching, and this combined with its quiet and extensive air filtration, leaves me a little lighter in the wallet, but hopefully my partner, two kitties, and I are healthier and happy for a long, long time.

I have no regrets.

"I would buy it again. No regrets." 2009-09-02
By K. McCaskey (Los Angeles)
I have severe allergies in September. I think ragweed is what does it and I live in Southern California, so the wildfires that spring up during this time don't help. I use this filter during this time and it helps me so much. I go from having hay fever to just having a stuffy nose. If you have ever had hay fever, then you know stuffy nose is a great improvement. I have used this in an 8x8 office, a 12x12 bedroom and in a 15x20 room. Obviously the smaller the room, the more effective, but I think it helps in the larger room as well. I use it with a portable A/C in the largest room, so that A/C is pushing out air and filtering the inside air as well. Without bringing in new air from outside.

I think it works well and makes a slight humming noise on the lower settings. A bit of a rattle on the highest setting. I can't sleep with it on high. The 2 lower settings are actually great white noise for sleeping. It is light and easily portable.

"Started chattering after a few months" 2009-04-02
By Jim D. Shelton (Santee, CA United States)
Seemed to clean the air pretty well and certainly liked the small-footprint tower design. But after a few months it now chatters loudly and is no longer useable. I didn't see anything obvious but sounds like something has broken internally. Guess I can get it fixed under warranty...if I can find the receipt. Decided to just replace it with a different model. I've good luck with Honeywell before but wouldn't recommend this model.

 "Doesn't work." 2009-03-24
By S. K. Dunn (Philadelphia, PA)
I just honestly do not think this thing does anything. I bought this for the kitchen to replace the Honeywell HHT-011 (which worked very well but broke due to a fall) because we can smell cigarette smoke from first floor tenants coming up from under the kitchen sink cabinet. When I walk into the kitchen the whole room smells like smoke, whereas the previous Honeywell we had when pointed at the cabinet would suck the smell up immediately and we could never smell it. I really wanted this to work, it is attractive and sleek looking as far as air filters go, but I really think after two months of having it that all it does is use electricity, I don't actually think it works.

"Early opinion of Honeywell HHT-081 air purifier" 2008-12-28
By Lenard McLean (Jacksonville NC)
Let me begin by saying that I purchased this air purifier for my mom who, (like myself) suffers from horrible allergies. Dust, moisture, etc - it virtually all sends her into a sneezing fit. Congestion, stuffy nose, and other annoyances frequent her days.

So anything to give some relief is a God-sent. However, I found myself extremely skeptical as to the actual effectiveness of these "air filtration devices". That is - until I spoke to my uncle who owns this same model. He said that it really helped to remove the dusty, musty smell from his living room.

This was a gift for her for Christmas 2008, but I had considered one of these last year.

I helped her set it up today, and here are the (admittedly) early findings.

Pros;

1) VERY easy to set up out of the box. Just take it out of the box, remove plastic bag from machine, and open the plastic bags containing the filter cartridges, and place them back into the machine. Then just plug it in and turn it on. It's really that simple.

2) 2) Price - If you have done your shopping/research on these machines, you know that you can pay hundreds, and even thousands for an air purifier. For what I paid on Amazon - I feel like I got a deal, plus free shipping.

3) Filters for this machine are REUSABLE. This means that the device SHOULD be less expensive to use over time.

4) Air flow - An air purifier is obviously a fan (or series of small fans) which pull air through a filtration system that removes smells, dust, and hopefully allergens as advertised. So it is obviously a plus for the device to circulate a large volume of the air in a given area. This one does move A LOT of air.

5) Relatively quiet when in use. (though a bit loud on High)

6) Size - Many of the medium-room air purifiers that I looked at had a large foot print. But this one does not take up a lot of floor space, (about a square foot).

Cons;

1) Slightly noisy (especially on high)

2) Cool air - As I stated earlier, this device obviously has a fan to move the air through the filters. The air that it blows back into the room feels quite a bit cooler than the room temperature. This is primarily a cool weather annoyance.

Overall - I would have to recommend this device quite highly based on early impressions. The price is good for the volume of air which it seems to move through the filters.

One note of caution before buying; If you want an air purifier for your bedroom - I would suggest that this unit may be a bit noisy unless you like ambient (fan type) noises while sleeping. I would suggest this model for living rooms, dining rooms, and other day-use areas.

"Not Everything I Was Expecting" 2008-11-30
By Benjamin J. Wimett (Brandon Vermont)
I have noticed a slight difference in the morning when I wake up I don't cough as much as I used to. However, the purifier has some major downsides. The biggest downside is the fact that it dries out the air. I can tolerate it but everyone else who comes into my living space has a difficult time. It is also very loud almost as loud as an air conditioner. So keep that in mind, I kind of wish I spent more money and went with the more trustworthy brand.

"Reduces allergies - Hard to clean - Not too noisy" 2009-09-08
By B. Moll (San Francisco bay area, CA)
I've had this purifier for about three years now, and have had a relatively good experience with it. I tried a different Honeywell/Enviracaire purifier before (Honeywell HHT-080 Permanent HEPA Tower Air Purifier), which I had to return because it was too noisy. This unit has a very acceptable (to me) white-noise, which is very easy to fall asleep to and helps to drown out street noise. Allergies have been reduced, and as some other reviewers have mentioned if I leave this running in a closed room for an hour or so I can notice the smell of ozone when I first enter the room. I never notice it when I start up the unit and then go to bed, or upon waking up in the morning, but it obviously does generate some ozone, so if you have severe problems with that, you should probably avoid this product.

Also mentioned previously is that this unit is hard to clean. I have cleaned the filter many times, and after trying once to clean the inside of the unit itself and giving up, I decided to buy some security Torx bits (the ones with a small hole in the middle of the Torx bit) and open it up. It wasn't the easiest, but I did manage to clean out most of the dust that had collected inside. Of course it's hard to tell objectively if the unit is now cleaning the air more efficiently.

"Nice design and easy to clean" 2009-04-01
By C Eddy (Boston, MA)
I'm really pleased with this Honeywell air purifier. I definitely have noticed a difference in the freshness of the air and I love the fact that the filter is washable. I don't have to worry about getting any replacement filters. When it is time to clean the filter, a light comes on that reminds me to clean it and I simply wash the filter in the kitchen sink with some dishwashing detergent. When I see how dirty the water is from cleaning the filter, it makes me glad that the dirt was captured in the filter and not still circulating in the air in my house. A great product for anyone looking for easy maintenance!

Seemed to work for a month - then nothing. All it does is move air around and make noise. When you go to clean the filter because the indicator says it's dirty - there's no dirt there to clean.

It's also advertised as HEPA, when it is not.

Bought an Austin HM-400, and the difference is astounding. The HM-200 is more equivalent to this one in price and performance - worth a look.

 "Home Depot & HFD-130" 2008-10-24
By Roger C. Legako
I bought this unit at Home Depot after looking at many reviews.

I wanted to buy locally so I could returd it if the unit did not work for my purposes.

When I went to open the unit at home I noticed triple taping on the box.

Upon opening the box, I noticed the packaging didn't seem to be from the factory.

I inspected everything carefully. Seemed OK.

I plugged the unit in after reading the manual. I immediately noticed the unit indicated a dirty filter. The filter looked OK so I tried to reset the indicator to show "clean". No Go. I called the Honeywell #. They finally advised me to return the unit.

I did return it within 2 days to Home Depot.

I did let the unit run for 2 days but still could not reset the indicator.

Some observations: Fairly quiet even on Med. speed. Lots of ozone smell everytime I came close to the bedroom.

I asked to see a manager at the Knoxville Home Depot (9361 Kingston Pike).

I told him I suspected I bought a defective returned unit that had simply been repackaged. He told me there was a possibility it had been returned by someone and that it was just placed back for sale. "There is no way we can test to see if the unit is OK". He open up a new box in front of me. There was sigificant difference in packaging. He offered to knock off 10% for my time (close to 2 hours) and gas (52 miles).

I told him to take a hike.

"Effective and for the most part Quiet" 2008-07-24
By Angel Cornell (Richland Center, WI USA)
I bought this air purifier because we were getting this musty moldy smell from our basement. We were also having breathing issues at night with always having stuffy noses. When I first got it I set it on high and kept it out in the hallway for about 3 days because there was a weird smell at first but that does go away. I usually run it on high out in the hallway during the day then I move it into the bedroom and set it on low at night. It's a bit noisy on high but not too bad and on the low setting it doesn't bother our sleep at all. As for our breathing issues we no longer have any as for when we wake up in the morning now we no longer have a stuffy nose and we're no longer waking up in the middle of the night to blow our noses. The musty moldy smell has also diminished greatly as well. I would highly recommend this Air Purifier.

 "Great for my allergies" 2009-07-02
By Pam (NY, USA)
My family has severe allergies and I bought this because I had good luck with the A350. It's not too big, quiet, looks good and it works. It's also pretty easy to change the filter. The filters get so gross I don't want to touch them, but the easy change makes it so I don't have too. I bought another Paralda air purifier for my husbands' office and everyone thinks it looks like something made by Mac. It's more green in color than it looks in the picture - at least on my computer. I like the color but it's a little different than I thought.

"Made a huge difference in our home air quality" 2009-03-24
By Mrs. Rowan G. (Cape Elizabeth, ME)
At the recommendation of my sister, who has bought the Paralda first - we purchased the air purifier for our home. My mother suffers from asthma and terrible allergies and lives with us - so anything we can do to make her more comfortable is worth it.

The Paralda is long and slender yet compact - it easily fit in our living room and didn't stick out like a sore thumb. It is very quiet and has varying speeds. It also had a UV lamp that zaps bacteria - and anything the HEPA air filter doesn't get. I noticed the air seemed fresher and there was less dust on the furniture. It felt like the pristine air you usually find in the dentist office - fresh, cleaner, very comfortable. The Paralda is not noisy at all compared to our Ionic Breeze air purifier we used to keep in my mother's bedroom. The control pad was very easy to figure out - even my mother could manage it on her own.

We have had the Paralda for several weeks now - and my mother seems to have more energy from sleeping better as a result of our cleaner air - which makes the price, to me, completely worth it. I must also mention - we run the Paralda all the time - and we have seem no marked increase in our electric bill ... it is a Energy Star rated appliance - and every little bit of savings helps us nowadays. I'd highly recommend this unit.

"Excellent Product at a ripoff price !!" 2008-12-30
By Donald Gillies (San Diego, CA United States)
I have bought 2x of these products, and they are excellent. I bought the earlier 450 sq ft model about 5 years ago, and it saved us during the San Diego fires. I bought the 510 model for my mom last christmas, and she just loves hers. It's not very loud, and you can shove it up against a wall, in a corner, without harming its function at all, so despite being rather big and boxy, it need not take up much space. I use ours sometimes as a coffee table. My mom shoved hers up against her dresser by the doorway, so it doesn't consume any usable floor space in her apartment. The large intake is on one side, at it shoots the fresh air straight up into the room, so pushing it against a wall doesn't harm its function.

There is no magic to this product. You need a large and powerful fan, and a large surface area, for a HEPA filter to work well. This is one of the largest of the large! The large surface area allows the fan to work at low RPM and makes it quieter. The settings are OFF-Speed1-Speed2-Speed3. The most powerful Speed3 is only moderately loud. We use this filter to clean our whole downstairs, which is about 1000 sq ft. No filter on the market is more muscular than this one.

I would normally rate this (*****) (5 stars), but the street price for this discontinued product was always $230-$300. I cannot understand why this retailer is asking for 5x-6x the normal price. So, based on value for money, I have to rate this product 1 star, at a price of $1295.00. This is a discontinued product, but heck, $1295 is just a ridiculous price and they are sucking the blood from innocent people with allergies. The price stinks, and even this excellent product cannot clean away THAT stench ...

 "Quiet, Effective Air Purifier" 2008-10-18
By M. Tyrrell (NY, NY)
I've had the 510 for several years now and am extremely pleased with it. It's relatively quiet (very important bc it's in my bedroom and is on when i'm sleeping). Though it is a bit louder when it's on high - most of the time it's on a lower setting bc that much power isn't always needed unless you're trying to clear the room of smoke or something else.

I like the very simple filter status lights - hold for five seconds to reset - and it tells you when you need to replace the filters. Although filters are expensive, all are purifiers are like that, and if you want it to continue to work effectively, it's just something that you have to invest in.

also, i really like the fact that it sucks in air from the front, and blows out from the top so i can put it up against my wall (i live in a small apartment so that really helps with space). It generally looks nice, keeps the apartment relatively dust-free and provides for nice air circulation in the apartment.

 "Better than most boyfriends.." 2008-09-07
By Alexandra Higgins (Palo Alto, CA United States)
I bought a Whirlpool Whispure 510 Air Purifier locally since I was in a desperate state due to allergies. The product works quite reliably in combination with prescription drugs (yay Nasacort AQ! better living through chemistery!). No tissue/wastebasket combos next the bed! This is a nice, against the wall type of unit. I also have a much larger Friedrich C-90A Electronic Air Purifier that I use as a side table which snaps erratically and isn't fit for a bedroom.

Some comments:

- This stands about 2' high, 1.5' wide, 10" deep and sucks in air from the front, cleans it, and then jets it up and out to your left as you face the unit, so think about room placement.

- The pre-filter and HEPA filter replacements are expensive, even the third party ones. I've "extended" the life of my pre-filter with outdoor vacuuming of the unit/pre-filter, especially in the initial setup phase. It sucked in so much dust that it was a nasty mess.

- The highest speed is rather noisy but makes a great "white noise" generator if you live near random noises like the entrance to my apartment complex. I slept a lot more solidly by _not_ hitting the "sleep" mode.

- Reliable. 3 years and going. This has lasted longer than most of my boyfriends.. :) :P

"Great air purifier, but shop for a good price" 2008-08-26
By Manly Cat Dude (City of Subdued Excitement, USA)
I have several air purifiers in my home now, and the Whispure 510 is by far the most effective for allergy sufferers. It is also the easiest to maintain and changing filters is both inexpensive and cheap, compared to all the other brands I have, by far. I highly recommend this unit and concur with the other positive reviews, but I have noticed a HUGE range in pricing and I would caution you to shop for a good price. You can easily find one for less than $500, and that is the most you should have to pay for a brand new unit. I have seen the exact same unit priced well over $1000 (like right here) and that is total rip-off pricing. Shop for your best price on this unit, but then go ahead and purchase it and you won't be disappointed, at least if you are an allergy sufferer.

"Excellent, turned it off and the allergies cme bck" 2008-05-20
By William N. Wang
Bought the unit based on reviews here and consumer reports. Turned it on low nd left it running. Like another reviewer mentioned in here, did not notice the smell of the room any crisper, cleaner or whatever. However, needed to turn the unit off one night and forgot to turn it back on, woke up with allergies in full force. have not tried turning it off again, but have noticed that am not waking up to go swallow claritin!

 "OK but noisy." 2009-08-12
By Denise E. Michaliszyn (Pittsburgh, PA)
So far this air purifier seems to work fine but not as well as one I bought 15 years ago. I also am sure it was not new but a return since the box was all taped together and the plastic cover over the carbon filter was already removed. I expect better from Amazon and the companies they do business with.

 "exactly what I expected" 2009-03-02
By Laura Breeden (Key West, FL United States)
Air purifier is not quiet but I didn't expect it to be. I actually like white noise. Seems to keep room free of some of the stronger per odors that were around before. Doesn't seem to collect as much dust/dander as previous Honeywell purifier I owned, but is adequate and I have no complaints.

"My Next One Will Be Bigger" 2008-12-19
By Cate (San Francisco, CA United States)
I think this is a fine machine for the size. Perhaps it is intended for a small office or something. I put it in my living room, so I think I was expecting too much. I stopped using it only because the air filter needed replacing and I haven't found a replacement yet. So, keep your space in mind--that's probably the most important thing. I'm sure I would have figured that out earlier if I had read all the literature.

This air purifier works great. It is quiet, looks good; takes up little desk space; and is easy to setup/use (out of the box). I would recommend it to anyone looking for a desktop air purifier.
