With 100 watts and a tiny coverage, this purifier is not energy efficient. The HEPA filter replacement for this product is so overpriced that the difference between the filter and the complete unit is only about $5-$10. Worse, Holmes stated that the HEPA filter must be replaced on 3-6 months of continued use. That's a pretty short life.

Quiet? nah. In fact it ties on loudness (on mid setting) with my Hamilton Beach TrueAir 04161, just slightly quieter on high setting ,and actually louder in lowest setting. The sound produced is also a rough motor type sound, which is not so pleasant to hear.

Its CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate, a measurement standard for air purifiers -- www.cadr.org) is only a measly 55-70.

However, it does its job removing particles from the air quite well on high setting.

If you can, get a better air purifier that has a cheap and long lasting HEPA filter.

I am a very careful shopper, and meticulously care for my property. This air cleaner was purchased on the recommendation of Consumer Reports.



The air cleaner would work well for awhile, but then I would notice BLACK FLECKS all over the walls, ceiling, windows, throughout the air cleaner ...... everywhere throughout the room!!!!!



This mess is caused by the replaceable "carbon filter" at the back of the air cleaner, and the mess DOES NOT clean up with soap and water - a heavy cleaning agent is required!!!!!



After the 4th mess throughout the family room, and numerous replacements of the "carbon filter" (one $24.00 filter lasting a whole 2 weeks before it spewed all over the walls and the air cleaner itself), I ordered a "pre-cleaning filter" to replace the "carbon filter", but the air cleaner no longer turned on. I believe too much BLACK GUNK from the carbon filter had ruined the air cleaner - and there is no way to take the air cleaner apart to clean the inside.



I made contact with the company for help with the problem. They merely guessed at what might have happened and offered no solutions.



After only 2 years this $500.00 air cleaner (not including the numerous replaceable "carbon filters") now rests in a land fill!!!

I have owned this guy since it came out and am very happy with the product, but the manual could use some improvement.



Used properly you'll get years of trouble free, cheap and clean air. The chief concern with a unit of this type is ozone production. Ozone is *bad* for you. This unit is *the* best rated unit for ozone production and its ozone levels are very safe -- *IF* the unit is properly serviced.



What the manual doesn't tell you -- if you smell ozone you need to clean the element. You will need to clean the element a lot. If you cant/won't do that, this is not the air cleaner you are looking for.



The second problem with the manual is the cleaning directions are frankly harmful. The manual says to use dish detergent. The dish detergent will react with the aluminum and over a long enough time line turning the element black. This deposit will act like a dielectric (just like the dirt the element collects naturally) and the thing will spew out ozone. Once this had happened I could not get the element clean again and had to replace it.



I suggest you clean the element in your dishwasher, with *no* soap and no jet dry. Fill the soap bucket with pure white vinegar and do a light wash. It will come out sparkling clean and so far mine has not changed colors -- sometimes simple is better. Vinegar is a natural aluminum cleaner. Do *NOT* add cream of tartar or baking soda (this is a common aluminum cleaning recipe) -- this will get baked on to the element and it will *never* come off. Ask me how I found out? :-)



Lastly, the element is a very standard Honeywell element. You can purchase one for around $125 from online HVAC sites should yours become soiled or damaged (the part # is stamped on the side of the element).

This is a wonderful air purifier. I did my research before buying and pulled the trigger about 2 months ago. I am so glad I did. I no longer have the allergy issues that I had in years past. Wow, this machine is amazing. I actually picked it up at a second hand store for $15.00 dollars. It only needed a new $36.00 HEPA filter. A little research pays off! This was my first air purifier purchase. Originally, I was going to buy an ionic one. But, I was amazed once I started researching how little I knew!



In case you're in the same boat, Here's the criteria I ultimately set, ratings for this model on the criteria, and my experience with it:



CRITERIA #1: Must noticably reduce our allergies, clear smoke and odors: 5+ Stars!

Have had it two months with a smoker, a hairy dog, and allergy season in full bloom. Reduced allergies and no breathing problems at home since we got it. Noticable quick removal of odors and smoke!



(NOTE: More power than I even intended. You may be able to get a cheaper model if you don't want all this one has:

A) Electrostatic/Ionic- attracts pollutants from a wide area, but not odors and allergens

B) Carbon - clears smoke, odors and pollutants but not germs and allergens

C) HEPA - traps even the smallest of allergens, but nothing else

D) UV - destroys bacteria and germs, but not allergens, pollution or smoke - cheaper models offer only HEPA and UV filters.)



Best Added Feature: The sensor lights that let you know the status of your air quality - and then watching them go off when it's corrected the problem.



CRITERIA #2: Low/No ozone model! 5+ stars.

I found that the old sharper image-type ionic-only models (many still on the market at reduced prices) only clean pollutants, but not odors and allergens. Worse, they generate ozone at a level that can exacberate asthma problems. The electrostatic filter combined with the ionic one in this model - eliminate that problem. Look for one that has this!



CRITERIA #3: High area coverage: 4.5 stars.

I found an obscure site that lists air purifiers and their coverage areas and particle levels. This one seems to cover about 1,200 sq. ft. - or more than double what is listed. But, even with what was listed, proved to be the best ranked in comparison with price levels.



CRITERIA #4: Low Noise: 4-stars.

We keep it in the living room mostly on auto. On low and medium, it's very quiet. On automatic mostly very quiet, unless it's under attack from something like cooking or opening the door frequently. On high, it makes a noticable "white noise". But, it's OK good for falling asleep and not so loud you can't hear the TV. Wouldn't put it on "high" regularly though.



CRITERIA #5: Price/Value including maintenance: 4.5 stars

My budget was $200. I went over that slightly. But, the filters on this one are so much cheaper than the models I compared it to that the extra $40 should more than pay out.



BOTTOM LINE: I chose this one based on research, but I highly recommend it for quality and value! If you want to cleaner, fresher air and reduced home allergies without intrusive noise - at the price, I'm not sure you can do better.

Given that there weren't many reviews out when I bought this purifier, I figured I'd take a minute and give a brief review of it after having used it for a few weeks.



Out of the box:



It's a very lightweight machine that has a very elegant/professional look to it. The "Flow, Timer, and Power" buttons feel a little like cheap plastic, but it's really not a big deal, nor does it diminish the look of the purifier.



In Action:



When I first started it up, I heard a little bit of "static" noise coming from the ionizer, as it was possibly collecting the dust that was in the packaging that it was shipped in. Within a minute, that noise was gone, and it has been operating very smoothly and quietly for the last few weeks. I live in a house with central air, and the air quality is pretty good, but since I have bad allergies, I wanted to get a purifier. To be honest, I'm not sure if I can tell the difference, if any, it has made in improving the air quality in my room, but I always keep it on (Auto setting) and it gives me comfort to know and "see" (the indicator) that my air is clean. Interestingly, the sensor in this purifier that determines the air quality and revs up its engines as soon as the air quality becomes worse is quite sensitive. It even knows that the air quality has changed/worsened (ever so slightly) whenever I peel an orange! - this also happens if you spray some cologne while you're in the room. Just a few minutes ago, I opened my window to my backyard and noticed the machine's air quality indicator shoot to its highest setting, signifying that the air needs to be rapidly cleaned. It was right! I know that there is a ton of pollen outside today, and that's what came into my room. My Intelli-Pro picked it up quickly and adjusted appropriately.



One small thing I don't like about the Intelli-Pro is its always-on blue light, which tells you that the UV light is working. I don't like sleeping with a night light, and even if you do, this light might be too bright to sleep with. For now I just angle the purifier away from my bed and that solves the issue. I may eventually want to put a small piece of tape over it - but obviously that would ruin its beauty.



I have not yet looked into how difficult it will be to clean the different filters, but there are decent instructions in the manual provided and I don't anticipate it taking more than 15-20 mins.



Overall, I'm very impressed with the different air-purifying technologies that this company has incorporated into quiet, yet powerful Intelli-Pro air purifier (look into the product details/description for the specifications). I would definitely recommend this other consumers in the market for a reasonably priced, high-quality air purifier. I'm sure you will like it!

This is an amazing deal I've had $5K air filters that performed similar to this filter. When I bought my first XJ- 30000 5 years ago they were going for 500 to 300 dollars I imagine the technology or scale has made them less expensive to make. Don't be fooled by those expensive air filters from evergreen or direct sales companies the mark up on them is 200x. Although this unit is not made in the USA what electronic gadget is these days? Highly recommend to eliminate mold and mildew from basements and in high humidity climates.

After doing a lot of research on quality and effectiveness, I chose the Austin air. I purchased one for my upstairs and liked it so much, I recently purchased a second one. I was lucky enough to get the R200-01-01 cheaper on A-Z for 324.00, no tax, 19.00 shipping. It was a steal compared to Amazon's prices and other vendors on the internet. I even got the larger one, not the Jr. size. It was brand new, not refurbished. I also found that some website vendors challenged consumers for a cheaper price any where else and they would honor the price. Check it out. It runs 450.00 everywhere else.

Hi...I ordered this cleaner but after consideration, felt it was too big for us. The company, Noel, was cordial, friendly, cooperative when I needed to return it. I feel the smaller one room version would be better for us as I'd also like to move it all around the house, including the upstairs. I did a lot of research and felt this was the best on the market. You buy the Austin, you've bought the best.

I looked into this a lot last year after I had my baby.



The major issues that I found were method of purification, noise, reusable vs disposable filter, and power/size.

Method: There was a lot of negative publicity about the Ionic filters because they can release ozone which is poisonous. The new ones use UV, I'm not sure how well they work but I don't think that they are great. The HEPA filters really take the junk out of the air and are pretty much great across the board in terms of air quality.

Noise: I looked at the customer reviews online for the various models and people had different things to say about each model. Check for the noise levels at the high med and low fan speeds.

disposable filters can get expensive quickly, most need to be changed every 3-6 months.

Size: purifiers generally say the size of the room that they can handle. Do not put the purifier in a room bigger than it can handle because it will burn through the filter and won't purify the air well.



I ended up going with Austin Air. They are expensive (between 300-550 depending on the model and where you get it, mine was 450$) and they are relatively large and heavy but they are on wheels so they are easily movable. They were repeatedly rated as the best purifiers below the industrial level. Its filters last for five years (they have a guarantee). Mine is almost silent at the lowest setting and pretty loud on the highest setting (sometimes I turn it on high and use it as a white noise machine to get to sleep). It works incredibly well, it removes smells from the room in seconds, and I sneeze less with it around. It pulls in air from four sides and changes over the air in a room pretty quickly.



All in all its a great purifier and I'm very happy with it.

The Austin Air Healthmate is the best I've ever owned. One large unit is enough for our entire house. It reduces (or even eliminates) odors from our cat's litter box and makes the stale air in our home fresher when we return from a couple of days away. We run it in the bedroom at night and wake up feeling healthier than we did before we got one of these. It's quiet on the lowest setting, and a little loud but very powerful on the highest setting. There's easy maintenance (just vacuum the outside once a month). Replacement filters are a little on the expensive side (around $200), but well worth it. The salesperson that sold us ours said we'd have to replace the filter every five years. We run ours constantly and had to replace it after three years. I think the expense is still worth it, as the quality of this product cannot be matched by less expensive purifiers.

I suffer from seasonal allergies. We put this unit in our bedroom and switch it on low speed (you hardly know it is running) for about three hours when retiring. I am experiencing an amazing improvement in sleep quality because my breathing is improved and I don't wake up sneezing every few hours. I highly recommend this model for people with allergies.
